Argentine composer Patricia Martínez was born in 1973 and passed away in 2022. She studied at the Universidad Nacional de Quilmes in Buenos Aires and at Stanford University with Brian Ferneyhough, as well as at IRCAM in Paris in 1996/97. Her diverse oeuvre has been performed by ensembles such as SurPlus, the Arditti Quartet, and the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, and presented at festivals in North and South America as well as in Europe, including the Donaueschinger Musiktage, the MATA Festival, Ars Electronica in Linz, and Lucerne Festival Forward. Recipient of numerous awards, most recently a sponsorship prize at the International Eisenach Bach Composition Prize (2020), JukeBoxx NewMusic Award (2021),the Hanns Eisler Scholarship of the City of Leipzig, and the Casa de las Américas (2013/2019), Martínez's special interest was interdisciplinary work, particularly in the field of contemporary music theater. She worked with electronics, video feeds, improvisational and choreographic elements, often aiming at the “impossible”: at something that magically appears, but cannot be defined and inundates any artistic language. Beginning in the 1990s, Patricia Martínez co-founded and directed numerous new music ensembles in Buenos Aires, Paris, and Virginia. She has been involved in the non-profit organization FASE and Compañía Helada (new opera), and has frequently served on the jury of the Juan Carlos Paz Composition Competition and Premios Gardel. She last taught at the Universidad Nacional de Quilmes, at the Conservatorio Superior de Música de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires "Astor Piazzolla”, and was an external tutor in the doctoral program of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México.
